Raising the Standard as a B Corp

Énska was built on the belief that the current state of real estate development should do more than just generate profit. It should strengthen communities, respect land, and create lasting opportunity for First Nations.

But as our work grew, so did our responsibility, and pursuing B Corp certification was a natural next step — one we’re proud to have achieved.

To get certified, companies must commit to:

1) using business as a force for good

2) ensuring all its decisions consider people, planet, and long-term impact.

B Corps are legally and operationally designed to balance profit with purpose. Globally, the community is focused on reshaping how the economy functions by shifting away from short-term extraction toward long-term value creation.

What is Means to be Certified

All B Corps undergo a comprehensive B Impact Assessment that evaluates:

  • How the company is governed

  • How workers are treated and supported

  • How communities are engaged

  • How environmental impact is managed

  • How customers are served

It looks at performance across five areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers.

Énska’s overall B Impact Score is 124.5. This is more than double the median score of 50.9 for standard companies that complete the assessment. Our strongest performance was in the Customers category, reflecting the trust placed in us by our First Nations partners.

Why We Pursued B Corp Certification

We wanted a rigorous, third-party framework that could measure how well we were living up to our values. Not just in our projects, but also in our governance, internal practices, and relationships.

Certification provided a way for us to hold ourselves accountable, benchmark our performance, and ensure our impact was not just well-intentioned but measurable.

“The B Corp movement reflects our own belief that business can and should create lasting value for people, land, and future generations,” said co-founder, Tim Coldwell. “That’s why this certification is a natural fit for Énska. Our work has always been about accountability and this is a way of reinforcing the standard we’ve always believed in.”

B Corp certification also builds on commitments we’ve already made through other accountability frameworks, including our certification with the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) and our partnership with Buy Social Canada, which verifies social procurement and community impact. Together, these certifications help ensure our work is measured not only by the projects we deliver, but by the long-term social, economic, and environmental outcomes they create.

What Comes Next

Our focus now is on continuous improvement by using the B Impact Assessment framework to identify gaps and deepen our impact – particularly across Indigenous communities.

Over the coming years, we will continue to:

  • Raise our performance standards

  • Expand transparent reporting

  • Invest in our people and partners

  • Reduce environmental impacts

  • Refine governance practices

Every recertification cycle will require us to demonstrate progress which makes accountability intentional and necessary.

The meaning behind our name, Énska – the Mohawk word for ‘one’ - is a reminder that leadership is about bringing people together around shared purpose. B Corp certification only strengthens that vision, and we’re committed to carrying it forward — in every project, every partnership, and every decision we make.
